Brendan Rodgers insists mentality can trump ability as he steps up his January recruitment drive.
But he says he won’t put the unity of his squad at risk for the sake of a signing. The boss is
adamant only the right types will enter his dressing room as the Hoops bid to progress in Europe, defend their league title and retain the Scottish Cup.
Rodgers said: “I tend to try to have a group that has a good synergy.
“That’s part of your recruitment. Getting the right types. The right profile. That’s equal to ability.
“The talent is no good if it doesn’t work. So it’s critical. I’ve got experience in that now where if it’s not right I will know it.
“So I will take a lesser talent who is coachable and hungry and bring that into my group.”
Rodgers – who took a gamble by signing Mario Balotelli for Liverpool before punting the
maverick Italian a year later after just one Premier League goal – said: “We get linked with lots of players and there are lots who could probably play for Celtic.
“But they don’t have the right characteristics to do it. So they don’t come in. Simple.”
