Federer beat Nadal in last year’s final in Melbourne and Djokovic thinks it will be the top two seeds who will be there or thereabouts again.
Djokovic is poised to return to action after recovering from his injury-plagued 2017 and he’s expected to challenge for the title as well, but the Serb star says it is Federer and Nadal who should be feared most.
Djokovic told Omnisport: “These two guys, considering the year they had and considering they played finals together here in Australia. They’re definitely two favourites to look at.”
Djokovic, who has won in Melbourne on six occasions with his last title coming in 2016, also believes local stars Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis can benefit from the home fans’ support and do well in the first Grand Slam of the year.
He added: “It’s still open. Nick is in great form. He is a home favourite. Australians are always getting great support here. [Thanasi] Kokkinakis is a good player, too. Anything can happen. It’s a Grand Slam. Every player is here with all his heart and energy, trying to do his best.”
