Jamie Carragher believes that it is crucial for Arsenal to sign a proven central defender in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners have long been criticised for their shaky performances at the back in recent seasons and it has been a problem again for the north London side this term.

Arsenal slipped to a disappointing 1-0 loss to local rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday as they suffered a potentially devastating blow to their hopes of finishing in the top four.

Arsene Wenger has been prepared to spend big on bolstering his attacking options in recent transfer windows, with the Gunners having signed the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January and the summer.

However, former Liverpool FC defender Carragher feels that the Gunners must now prioritise bolstering their defensive options in the summer transfer window.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher said: “I look at Arsene Wenger saying he couldn’t afford Jonny Evans, but he could afford £50m strikers. It’s not about affording – he just doesn’t see it.

“I don’t think he’s ever spent big on a defender. Why didn’t he go for Virgil van Dijk? Liverpool have got the same problems.

“At least Jurgen Klopp is trying to fix it with Van Dijk. Why isn’t he going for those players?”
