Jose Mourinho remains confident that Manchester United will still finish in second place in the Premier League table this season.

The Portuguese coach watched his side slump to a disappointing 1-0 loss to Newcastle United in the top flight on Sunday afternoon as they fell further behind leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils are still occupying second spot but they are now just two points ahead of Liverpool FC in third as the race for Champions League qualification begins to hot up.

A finish in the top four would mark a considerable improvement for Manchester United this season after they finished in sixth place in the table last term.

And Red Devils manager Mourinho still appears to be confident that his side will finish in the top four this season and most likely in second place.

Speaking at his post-match news conference on Sunday, Mourinho said: “We are second, so our position is better than all the others that are behind us, but there is still a lot of matches still to play and we have to fight for the position.”

Manchester United will return to action on Saturday when they take on Huddersfield Town in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Mourinho led the Red Devils to League Cup and Europa League glory in his first season in charge at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have not won the Premier League title since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
