Martin Keown has suggested that Jose Mourinho should drop Manchester United summer signing Romelu Lukaku for Tuesday’s trip to Watford.

The Red Devils signed the Belgium international in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton back in July after seeing off competition from title holders Chelsea.

Lukaku hit the ground running at Old Trafford following an impressive return of 10 goals in his opening nine games in the Champions League and the Premier League.

The 24-year-old endured a six-game goal drought after he failed to find the net against Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea before Lukaku netted Manchester United’s fourth goal in a 4-1 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Lukaku fired a blank in a 1-0 win over Brighton at Old Trafford at the weekend as the Belgian forward struggles to find consistency following the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from injury.

Former Arsenal defender Keown believes Mourinho should drop Lukaku for the trip to Watford to rile up his summer signing before restoring the centre-forward to his team.

“If Jose Mourinho wants to get Romelu Lukaku firing again, he needs his £75million striker to reach boiling point,” Keown told The Daily Mail.

“I am not talking about a petulant reaction to a penalty-box wrestle with an opponent, but rather his performance.

“It might be the right moment to leave him out against Watford on Tuesday….
