Craig Bellamy believes Paul Pogba wouldn’t be such a creative force in the Manchester United team without Nemanja Matic.
Pogba completed a then world-record £89m move to Manchester United from Serie A giants Juventus last summer following Jose Mourinho’s appointment.
The 25-year-old struggled to hit the ground running in his first season back at Old Trafford, and Pogba’s performances attracted criticism despite a return of five goals and four assists.
Serbia international Matic moved to the Red Devils in a £40m deal from defending Premier League champions Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
The defensive midfielder has proven a great addition to the Manchester United team and has given Pogba license to roam.
The Frenchman scored two goals and made two assists in four games in the Premier League before he suffered a hamstring problem in a 3-0 win against Basel in the Champions League.
Pogba returned to the Manchester United team last weekend and he created Anthony Martial’s goal before finding the net in a 4-1 win over Newcastle United.
However, former Manchester City striker Bellamy believes credit should go to Matic for helping to get the best out of Pogba.
“He is a free spirit in the Man United side. That’s what Matic is so important,” Bellamy told Sky Sports.
