Manchester United are keeping tabs on Toby Alderweireld’s situation at Tottenham Hotspur as the Red Devils ponder a summer transfer bid for the defender, according to reports in the British media.
The Manchester Evening News is reporting that the Red Devils are interested in signing the Belgian defender as he continues to stall on a new contract at White Hart Lane.
The 28-year-old’s current deal at White Hart Lane is due to expire in 18 months’ time, although it also includes an option for Spurs to extend it for another year next summer.
The same report also claims that Alderweireld’s current deal contains a release clause of £25m, but that can only be activated in the 2019 summer transfer window.
The article says that Manchester United are very much interested in a move to sign Alderweireld because of the ongoing contract situation at White Hart Lane.
The defender has been struggling with a hamstring injury in recent weeks but returned to the Tottenham team for their 2-0 win over Newport Town in their FA Cup fourth round replay.
Alderweireld was left out of the Tottenham team for the north London derby last weekend and their 2-2 draw with Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Manchester United, who are second in the Premier League, are bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks and months as the summer transfer window draws every nearer.
