Mike Ashley won’t be around much longer

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley announced in October that he was willing to sell the club.

British Businesswoman, Amanda Staveley was the first to show her interest and even attended Newcastle’s match against Liverpool, which ended in a fairly credible 1-1 draw.

Ashley has owned Newcastle since 2007 and has not been a popular figure at the club.

Since his takeover, Newcastle have been relegated to the Championship twice and haven’t won any (first class) silverware.

The 53 year old earned his wealth through his company, Sports Direct.

In 2011, Ashley even renamed Newcastle’s historic ground, St James’ Park, “The Sports Direct Arena”.

It’s fair to say that this was an unsuccessful move as fans were outraged and the stadium name was reverted back after not being “commercially attractive”

So what now?

The Daily Mail reported this morning that a ‘Dubai Investor’ is interested in buying the club.

The investors, who are not named, reportedly are willing to match Ashley’s asking price but only once Newcastle’s safety in the Premier League is certain.

Newcastle are currently 13th in the table, just two points clear of 18th placed Stoke in the relegation zone.
