Finally it was game day in Florida so we hit the road to the Orlando City Stadium, writes Scott McDermott.
Just along from the home of legendary NBA side Orlando Magic, it’s downtown in a less affluent area. We were told by organisers to get there early to avoid the crowds. So we turned up with hours to spare – only to find the place deserted.
Our lovely Florida Cup hosts assured us 6000 tickets had been sold for Rangers’ match with Atletico Mineiro. But that must have included the mascots, officials and half-time cartoon characters.
Spongebob Squarepants was on the pitch having a pop at goal. And I swear he’d have done a better job than Dalcio at left-back for Gers.
The on-loan Portuguese had a torrid time against the Brazilians which had the travelling punters watching the first half through the cracks of their fingers.
He’d have been as well sitting in the terrific press box with us up in the main stand.
I’m not sure Graeme Murty would have approved of our pre-match diet however. Say what you like about the Americans but they know how to put on a spread.
The cold buffet – before the team had even arrived – consisted of beef rolls, wraps and sandwiches. But that was just a warm-up for the hot stuff arriving prior to kick-off.
Hot dogs, pulled pork and slider burgers were all on the menu before the huge chocolate chip cookies. I could barely fit into my seat by the time the game started.
