According to the court documents released on Friday, the Russians stole the identities of American citizens, posed as political activists and exploited sensitive issues in the United States, such as immigration, religion and race to influence the campaign.
The special counsel leading the investigation, Robert S. Mueller III, made no accusation that Mr. Trump or his associates were knowingly part of the conspiracy. Some of the Russian contacts were with “unwitting individuals associated with the Trump campaign,” the court documents said.
This is not the first time Mr. Trump has criticized the Obama administration for not doing enough to prevent the Russian meddling that, according to the recent indictment, started in 2014. In June of last year, Mr. Trump said Mr. Obama “did NOTHING.” And some Democrats also have criticized the previous administration for not disclosing the interference attempts.
