MANILA, Philippines – University of the Philippines (UP) coach Bo Perasol quietly notched an impressive coaching achievement on Sunday, after he piloted the Fighting Maroons to an 84-71 victory over University of the East (UE).
The win was already Perasol’s seventh victory in two seasons with the Fighting Maroons – matching the team’s total number of victories in the six seasons before he took over.
From Seasons 73 until 78, as UP went through five coaches, the Fighting Maroons won a grand total of seven victories against a whopping 77 defeats – a stretch of futility that included two winless seasons, and two other one-win seasons.
Perasol was unaware of what he did on Sunday, but once informed of his achievement, he proceeded to make light of it.
“Unang-una, hindi pa tapos ‘yung ambisyon natin,” said Perasol, whose UP squad is now 2-1 in UAAP Season 80. “Masaya tayo na naabutan na natin ‘yun, pero malayo sa utak natin ‘yung mga nangyari noon.”
Perasol said that for all the improvements that the Fighting Maroons have made in his two years in charge, they have yet to reach the level that he truly wants them to be in.
“Malayo pa kami doon sa point na talagang gusto kong lumaban – ‘yung point na pagkita mo, alam ko talo ko ‘to,” he said. “Personnel eh, laging personnel.”
“I’m happy na naabot namin ‘yan,” Perasol added. “But at the same time, we’re looking forward na maabot namin ‘yung goal natin na umabot ng Final 4.”
Indeed, Perasol does not want to dwell too much on his achievement on Sunday, as he has much loftier goals in mind.
“Itong season na ito, ilalaban natin,” he said. “Eventually, matuwid din natin sa susunod na generations ng mga players. ‘Yun ang importante.”
